INTO THE LIGHT
SPRING SUMMER 2011/12

Once upon a time there was a beautiful, sophisticated lady scientist. She was a lepidopterist, she studied moths. Nobody else really appreciated musty, dusty moths but she loved their subtle markings and hidden depths. She wore boucle suits, shell tops, A line skirts and tea dresses. Underneath her demure exterior there was a pent up disquiet, but none of her fellow scientists appealed. On hot, musky summer nights she would go to the local speedway to collect specimens. Moths are attracted to light and the banks of spotlights circling the race track were the biggest lights in town. After one very strenuous night with her nets she stopped to catch her breath behind the light banks.

He was a very handsome young speedway driver. He lived to race - motorbikes and stockcars. He wore overalls to race in, narrow cut jeans and singlets when he wasn’t (it was a very hot summer). He was always gritty with dust from the track and smeared in oil from the engines.

One night he won the big race. Firing on adrenalin but suffocated by the speedway slappers, he ducked behind the light banks to catch his breath.
Their eyes met. It was electric. Before you could blink they were going for it, fully clothed. Violent sparks flew off them – neon blue, yellow and green. But while they were entangled a strange thing happened.
Her specimen catch bags got caught up between them and burst, showering moth dust everywhere.
All their clothes got tangled and twisted up and mutated.

“Wow” he said lighting a cigarette.
“Wow” she said exhaling the smoke.
Together they walked back Into the Light...
