THE BEATLES V THE ROLLING STONES, JANE AUSTEN V THE BRONTE SISTERS

One of the great right of passage decisions in life that I completely subscribe to is that we all, one day must make the commitment.

Beatles or Rolling Stones.

You’re either one or the other and to be a fully formed person you must know which one you are.
I am a Rolling Stones fan, I never even stopped to consider the choice and have loved them my whole life.

Hitler is the Beatles, Gadafi,Rolling Stones.
Anna Wintour Beatles, Carine Roitfeld Stones.
Obama Beatles, Clinton Stones.
I’ve no proof of the above, it just seems obvious to me.

The other day I was contemplating Mia Wasikowska in the upcoming role of Jane Eyre and I realised that Jane Austen is Beatles and the Bronte Sisters are Stones.
This is the literary version of Stones vs. Beatles.
In your literary life you are either Austen or Bronte, pop or Rock.
I love the Brontes’ as much as I love the Stones.

Fine manners, studied prose and perfectly formed story lines be damned.
Give me hysterical repression, glorious delirious passion and tortured gothic ghosts every time.
Jane Eyre is one of my favourite books of all time and one of my favourite characters. A classic Good Girl who likes Bad Boys.
She’s the ultimate Kate Sylvester mash up – all buttoned up grey serge and exploding lace petticoats.

Mia Wasikowska may be genius casting and this may be a beautiful movie – I have high hopes.
But in the meantime read the book before you see the movie.
There’s no maybe about it.
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is the Rolling Stones.
