TELL US ABOUT YOUR PRACTICE
Most recently I did a series of portrait paintings entitled “I Saw it in You” focused on 20 somethings living on the eastside of LA. Unable to reckon with the intangibility of time I set out to find a method of preservation. I wanted to capture what I was experiencing, the mix of anxiety, hope, excitement and boredom that comes with a particular time in life. It was a way for me to reflect my own existential uneasiness onto my subjects. I recorded the details of each person’s habitat, interested in the significance of each element and the narrative they told. I was looking for the realness of a particular moment, a contrast to the desire for perfectly manicured images that invade us on a daily basis.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVOURITE ARTISTS OR DESIGNERS RIGHT NOW?
I like William Hogarth, Manet, Lucian Freud, Eric Fischl, William Eggleston,
Chantal Joffe, Charlie Roberts, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer and Danny Fox.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN?
Read books (listen to audiobooks), take
road trips, hang out at echo park lake, watch people play music, make things and travel.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF BEAUTY?
The things I tend to consider most beautiful are often the new or unusual,
something I have never seen or thought of before. Also things that are candid, true, that resonate with a personal experience or feeling. Something that evokes a reaction. Whether joy, or sadness, or complete confusion - it’s something that reminds me that I’m alive and feeling feelings.
